HFA stands for Hydrofluoroalkane, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Propellant used in modern metered-dose inhalers, printed after the drug name, as in "albuterol HFA" or "Flovent HFA". It replaced chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants, which damage the ozone layer.
Example: ProAir HFA 90 mcg/actuation, 2 puffs q4-6h PRN; prime before first use.
Usage notes
The FDA required CFC-containing albuterol inhalers to leave the US market by the end of 2008 under the Montreal Protocol. HFA inhalers produce a softer, warmer spray and need regular cleaning of the mouthpiece to prevent clogging. Newer propellants with lower global-warming potential are being developed to replace HFA-134a.
