J2EE stands for Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition, a programming abbreviation.
The platform of APIs for building large server-side Java applications, including servlets, JavaServer Pages, Enterprise JavaBeans and messaging. It defined how enterprise Java apps ran on application servers such as WebLogic, WebSphere and JBoss.
Example: The insurer's policy system is a J2EE monolith deployed on WebSphere.
Usage notes
Sun used the J2EE name from 1999 until 2006, when it became Java EE. Oracle transferred Java EE to the Eclipse Foundation in 2017, where trademark limits led to the name Jakarta EE and a change of package names from javax to jakarta. Job ads for legacy systems still say J2EE.
