HATEOAS stands for Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State, a programming abbreviation.
A REST constraint under which API responses include links to related actions and resources, so clients discover what they can do next from the response itself rather than from hard-coded URLs.
Example: Following HATEOAS, the order response includes a "cancel" link only while cancellation is allowed.
Usage notes
Part of Roy Fielding's original definition of REST; Fielding has argued that APIs without hypermedia are not truly RESTful. Few public APIs implement it fully. Formats such as HAL and JSON:API standardize how links are embedded.
