IIFE stands for Immediately invoked function expression, a programming abbreviation.
A JavaScript pattern that defines a function and runs it at once, creating a private scope so variables do not leak into the global namespace. It was the standard way to build modules before ES6.
Example: The legacy plugin wraps everything in an IIFE to avoid clobbering the global jQuery variable.
Usage notes
The name was coined by Ben Alman in 2010; earlier the pattern was often called a self-executing anonymous function. Block-scoped let and const and native modules made it far less necessary. Pronounced "iffy". Bundlers still emit IIFEs in their output files.
