1. Integrated development environment

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

An application that combines a code editor, build tools, debugger and often version control and refactoring features in one interface. Visual Studio, IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, Xcode and Android Studio are full IDEs, while editors such as VS Code become IDE-like through extensions.

Example: Open the project in your IDE and set a breakpoint on line 42 before running the tests.

Maestro I, released by Softlab Munich in 1975, is often called the first IDE, and Borland's Turbo Pascal (1983) brought the idea to PCs. Modern IDEs add code completion, static analysis and AI coding assistants. In hardware, IDE also names the old Integrated Drive Electronics disk interface, later called PATA.

2. Investigational device exemption

Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations

FDA authorization allowing an unapproved medical device to be used in a clinical study to collect safety and effectiveness data, governed by 21 CFR Part 812. Significant-risk device studies need FDA approval of the IDE as well as IRB approval.

Example: IDE approved; enrollment in the pivotal device trial begins next month.

Non-significant-risk device studies can proceed with IRB approval alone under abbreviated requirements. The IDE is the device counterpart of the investigational new drug application. Data from IDE studies support later 510(k), De Novo or PMA submissions.

3. Integrated Drive Electronics

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Drive interface introduced in 1986 that moved the controller circuitry onto the hard drive itself, connected to the PC by a 40-pin ribbon cable. The name became a common synonym for the ATA standard and its parallel cables.

Example: Set the old drive's jumper to slave before putting it on the same IDE cable as the CD-ROM.

Western Digital developed IDE with Compaq and Control Data, and it was standardized as ATA in 1994. Some BIOS menus still offer an "IDE mode" for SATA drives, which emulates the old interface; switching Windows from IDE to AHCI mode after installation can cause an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error. In programming, IDE means integrated development environment.
