Group of 23 autonomous public engineering and technology institutes in India, the first of which opened at Kharagpur in 1951. Admission to undergraduate programs is through the highly competitive JEE Advanced exam, and graduates are recruited worldwide.
Example: Sundar Pichai earned his undergraduate degree from IIT Kharagpur before moving to the US.
Individual institutes are named by location, as in IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi or IIT Madras. The IITs were declared Institutes of National Importance by the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961. IIT also abbreviates the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
2. Investigator-initiated trial

Clinical study conceived, designed and run by an academic or clinician investigator rather than a company, although a manufacturer may supply the drug or partial funding. IITs often explore new uses, doses or populations that companies do not prioritize.
Example: Our IIT tests a lower dose of the approved drug in older adults; the company provides study drug only.
When the investigator also holds the IND or IDE, they take on a sponsor's regulatory obligations as a sponsor-investigator. Funding often comes from foundations, government grants or industry research programs. Companies call them investigator-sponsored studies (ISS).
