1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Education & Academia · University Abbreviations
Private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, founded in 1861 by William Barton Rogers, and one of the world's most influential centers of science, engineering and technology. It admits only a few percent of applicants, and from 2025 families earning under $200,000 pay no tuition.
Example: She was admitted to MIT early action and plans to major in Course 6.
MIT moved across the Charles River from Boston to Cambridge in 1916. Departments go by numbers, so "Course 6" means electrical engineering and computer science and "Course 2" mechanical engineering. Its motto is "Mens et Manus" (mind and hand), and students wear a class ring called the Brass Rat. The initials also appear in other names, such as the Manipal Institute of Technology in India.
2. MIT License
Technology & Computing · Software Abbreviations
Short, permissive open-source license, named after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, that lets anyone use, copy, modify, merge, sell and sublicense software as long as the copyright and license notice are kept. It is the most common license on GitHub.
Example: The SDK is under the MIT license, so we can bundle it in our commercial product.
The license text runs to only about 170 words and disclaims all warranties. React, Node.js, jQuery and Ruby on Rails use it. Close relatives include the ISC and 2-clause BSD licenses, which differ mainly in wording. Unlike the Apache License 2.0, it contains no explicit patent grant, a point some corporate lawyers weigh when choosing between them.
