IUP stands for Intrauterine pregnancy, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Pregnancy located inside the uterine cavity, confirmed on ultrasound by a gestational sac containing a yolk sac or embryo. Documenting an IUP essentially rules out ectopic pregnancy in women who have not had fertility treatment.
Example: Bedside ultrasound: single live IUP, CRL 7 weeks, cardiac activity present.
Usage notes
A heterotopic pregnancy, with both intrauterine and ectopic pregnancies, is very rare naturally but more common after IVF. A pregnancy of unknown location is followed with serial hCG levels and ultrasound until an IUP or ectopic is identified. An "IUP of uncertain viability" describes an early sac without definite heartbeat.
