E911 stands for Enhanced 911, a telecom abbreviation also used in government.
US emergency calling system that automatically sends the caller's phone number and location to 911 dispatchers, rather than relying on the caller to describe where they are. Mobile carriers must provide increasingly precise location data.
Example: The VoIP provider asks for your E911 address so dispatchers know where to send help.
Usage notes
Wireless E911 rules from the FCC came in phases: Phase I provides the cell tower and sector, and Phase II provides latitude and longitude. Later rules added vertical location (floor level) in large cities, and Kari's Law (2018) requires multi-line phone systems to allow direct 911 dialing. Next Generation 911 is moving the system to IP networks that accept texts, photos and video.
