EV-DO stands for Evolution-Data Optimized, a telecom abbreviation.
3G mobile data standard for CDMA2000 networks, used by Verizon, Sprint and other CDMA carriers in the 2000s. Revision A offered download speeds up to about 3.1 Mbit/s.
Example: Back in 2008 the laptop used an EV-DO card to get online from the train.
Usage notes
EV-DO, also written 1xEV-DO, dedicated a separate channel to data, unlike the slower 1xRTT service shown on phones as "1X". It was a rival to UMTS and HSPA in the GSM world. CDMA carriers later moved to LTE, and EV-DO networks were shut down with CDMA in the early 2020s.
