EDGE stands for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, a telecom abbreviation.

Upgrade to GSM networks that roughly tripled data speeds over GPRS, reaching a few hundred kilobits per second at best. Phones show an "E" icon when using it, often a sign of weak coverage.

Example: Out in the hills the phone dropped to EDGE, and the map took a minute to load.

Usage notes

EDGE is sometimes called 2.75G. It achieves higher speeds by using 8PSK modulation, carrying three bits per symbol instead of one. The original iPhone of 2007 supported only EDGE for cellular data, which reviewers criticized. Some carriers still operate EDGE for basic coverage and machine-to-machine devices.
