DOCSIS stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, a telecom abbreviation.
Standard that allows high-speed internet over cable TV coaxial networks, used by cable providers such as Comcast, Charter, Virgin Media and Rogers. Cable modems must support the provider's DOCSIS version.
Example: Buy a DOCSIS 3.1 modem if you want gigabit speeds from the cable company.
Usage notes
CableLabs released DOCSIS 1.0 in 1997. DOCSIS 3.0 (2006) bonded multiple channels for faster speeds, and DOCSIS 3.1 (2013) introduced OFDM, supporting up to about 10 Gbit/s downstream. DOCSIS 4.0 aims for multi-gigabit symmetric service. Upload speeds on cable have traditionally been much lower than download speeds.
