1. Specific learning disorder
Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations
Neurodevelopmental disorder involving persistent difficulty learning academic skills such as reading, writing or mathematics, well below what is expected for age despite adequate instruction. Common forms are dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia.
Example: SLD with impairment in reading (dyslexia); recommend structured literacy intervention and accommodations.
DSM-5 combined earlier separate reading, mathematics and written expression disorders into one diagnosis with specifiers. US special education law (IDEA) uses the similar term "specific learning disability". Difficulties must persist for at least six months despite targeted help. Many people with SLD also have ADHD.
2. Specific learning disability
Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations
IDEA disability category for disorders in basic psychological processes that affect reading, writing, spelling or math, including dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. It is the largest category of students served in special education, about a third of the total.
Example: The evaluation found an SLD in reading consistent with dyslexia.
Schools may identify SLD through response to intervention or through patterns of strengths and weaknesses; IDEA 2004 stopped requiring the older IQ-achievement discrepancy model. The category excludes learning problems caused primarily by vision, hearing, motor or intellectual disabilities. Many people simply say "learning disability" (LD).
3. Second-level domain
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
The part of a domain name directly to the left of the top-level domain, such as "example" in example.com. It is usually the brand or name a person registers, though some country registries use fixed second levels such as .co.uk or .com.au.
Example: Our SLD is the company name; product sites live on subdomains beneath it.
Registrants lease a second-level domain from a registrar, then create any subdomains they want at no extra cost. Domain disputes and trademark claims concern this part of the name. In bbc.co.uk, "co" is the second level run by the registry and "bbc" sits at the third level.
