NAFLD stands for Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Former name for fat accumulation in more than 5 percent of liver cells in people who drink little alcohol, linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. It affects roughly a quarter to a third of adults worldwide and ranges from simple steatosis to inflammation, fibrosis and cirrhosis.
Example: Ultrasound shows diffuse steatosis; NAFLD likely, FIB-4 1.9, order elastography.
Usage notes
In 2023 a multisociety consensus led by AASLD and EASL replaced NAFLD with MASLD, partly to drop the stigmatizing word "fatty" and the exclusion-based "nonalcoholic". Nearly all patients with NAFLD meet the new MASLD criteria, so older studies remain applicable. British texts often hyphenate it as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
