NASH stands for Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Former term for the progressive, inflammatory form of fatty liver disease, defined on biopsy by steatosis plus hepatocyte ballooning and lobular inflammation. It can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma and became a leading reason for liver transplant listing in the US.
Example: Liver biopsy: NASH with stage F3 bridging fibrosis, NAFLD activity score 6.
Usage notes
Coined by Jurgen Ludwig and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic in 1980. Renamed MASH in 2023 together with the NAFLD-to-MASLD change. The NAFLD Activity Score (NAS) grades steatosis, inflammation and ballooning on a 0–8 scale. Pronounced "nash" as a word.
