1. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations
Grouped symptom shorthand used in triage and review of systems, often pointing to viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning or medication effects. Notes typically pair it with fever, abdominal pain and signs of dehydration to judge how sick the patient is.
Example: Three days of NVD after cruise; norovirus suspected, oral rehydration and contact precautions.
Templates frequently use the negative form "denies NVD". The same letters also appear as N/V/D. Norovirus causes most outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis in the US, and dehydration is the main risk for infants and older adults. In obstetrics NVD can instead mean normal vaginal delivery, a reason to spell it out.
2. National Vulnerability Database
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
The US government database, run by NIST, that enriches CVE records with severity scores, affected product lists and references, feeding vulnerability scanners and patch management tools worldwide.
Example: The NVD entry still shows "awaiting analysis", so we scored the CVE ourselves.
Launched in 2005. In early 2024 NIST sharply slowed its analysis of new CVEs, creating a large backlog that pushed organizations toward other enrichment sources. Its data is available through public APIs.
