NGFW stands for Next-generation firewall, a cybersecurity abbreviation.
A firewall that combines traditional port and address filtering with deeper inspection, including application awareness, user identity, intrusion prevention, TLS decryption and threat intelligence. Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet and Check Point sell them.
Example: The NGFW policy allows Microsoft Teams but blocks personal file-sharing apps for the finance group.
Usage notes
Gartner popularized the category around 2009, and Palo Alto Networks' application-aware firewalls defined it. Internet-facing firewall and VPN appliances have become frequent targets of zero-day exploits. Cloud-delivered firewalls in SASE offerings extend similar controls to remote users.
