RYGB stands for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Bariatric operation that creates a small gastric pouch connected to a limb of jejunum, bypassing most of the stomach and the duodenum. It produces substantial weight loss and often remission of type 2 diabetes, but requires lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation.
Example: Status post RYGB 2017, now with iron deficiency and marginal ulcer at the gastrojejunostomy.
Usage notes
The Roux-en-Y configuration is named after Swiss surgeon César Roux. Long-term issues include marginal ulcers, internal hernias, dumping syndrome and deficiencies of iron, B12, calcium and vitamin D. The altered anatomy makes standard ERCP difficult. Sleeve gastrectomy has overtaken it as the most common bariatric operation worldwide.
