1. Quarterback
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Offensive player who lines up behind or under the center, receives the snap and starts nearly every play by handing off, running or throwing a forward pass. Because the position touches the ball on every snap, quarterbacks are the highest-paid players in the NFL and the focus of most game plans.
Example: The Chiefs' QB threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns in the AFC title game.
The name comes from early formations in which backs were named for their depth behind the line: quarterback, halfback and fullback, from shallowest to deepest. Pronounced as letters, "Q-B". The starter is often called QB1, and a dual-threat QB is one who runs as well as passes. In business English, "to quarterback" a project means to direct it.
2. Queen's Bench
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations
Name used during the reigns of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II for the High Court division that is now the King's Bench Division, and for the Law Reports series covering its cases. Classic contract cases such as Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co are cited to it.
Example: Students still learn unilateral contracts from Carlill, reported at [1893] 1 QB 256.
The Queen's Bench Division (QBD) was formed in 1881 when the old common-law courts were merged under the Judicature Acts. Neutral citations ended in (QB) until September 2022. In American football QB means quarterback; in a citation with a year in square brackets it refers to these reports.
