1. GO Transit
Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations
Regional public transit service for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, running commuter trains and buses, operated by the provincial agency Metrolinx. Its green-and-white trains serve Union Station in downtown Toronto.
Example: The GO train from Oakville to Union takes about 35 minutes.
The name originally stood for "Government of Ontario," the operator when service began in 1967. Ontario has been converting GO lines to frequent, two-way all-day service under its expansion program. The UP Express from Union to Pearson Airport is a separate Metrolinx service.
2. General obligation bond
Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations
Municipal bond backed by the full faith, credit and taxing power of the state or local government that issues it, rather than by revenue from a specific project. GO bonds are generally considered among the safest municipal debt.
Example: Voters approved a $500 million GO bond to rebuild aging school buildings.
Many states require voter approval for GO bond issues. The alternative is a revenue bond, repaid from income such as tolls, water fees or hospital revenue. Interest on most municipal bonds is exempt from federal income tax.
3. General officer
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Collective term for officers in the grades of brigadier general through general (O-7 to O-10) in the Army, Air Force, Space Force and Marine Corps. The Navy and Coast Guard equivalent is flag officer.
Example: The change of command will be attended by three GOs and a delegation from Congress.
Often written GO/FO when referring to all senior officers across services, as in "GO/FO billets." The number of active-duty general and flag officers is capped by law, and Congress periodically cuts the total. In other usage, GO is also the name of a board game and a common word.
