ETCS stands for European Train Control System, a rail and transit abbreviation.

Standard signaling and train protection system adopted across the European Union to replace dozens of incompatible national systems, letting trains cross borders without changing equipment. Information is sent to the cab rather than shown on lineside signals.

Example: Only trains equipped with ETCS Level 2 can run on the new high-speed line.

Usage notes

ETCS is the signaling part of ERTMS, the European Rail Traffic Management System, which also includes the GSM-R radio network. It operates at several levels, with higher levels relying more on radio communication. The system has been exported to countries including China, India, Saudi Arabia and Australia.
