EOT stands for End-of-train device, a rail and transit abbreviation.
Electronic unit mounted on the last car of a freight train that monitors brake-line pressure and confirms the train is intact, transmitting data by radio to the locomotive. EOT devices replaced cabooses on most North American freight trains in the 1980s.
Example: The EOT shows brake pressure at the rear, so the engineer knows the train hasn't separated.
Usage notes
Railroaders nicknamed them "FRED," for flashing rear-end device. Two-way EOT devices can trigger an emergency brake application from the rear of the train. The loss of the caboose also meant crews shrank from four or five people to two.
