GNWL stands for General waiting list, a rail and transit abbreviation.

Most common Indian Railways waiting-list category, issued to passengers boarding at or near the train's originating station. GNWL tickets have the best chance of getting confirmed because cancellations along the whole route help.

Example: GNWL 25 on a long-distance train usually clears, so I booked it anyway.

Usage notes

Shown on the ticket as GNWL followed by a number. Confirmation chances depend on the train, season and how far ahead the ticket is booked. During festivals such as Diwali and Chhath, even low GNWL numbers may fail to clear.
