HS2 stands for High Speed 2, a rail and transit abbreviation.
High-speed railway under construction between London and Birmingham, designed for trains running at up to 360 km/h (about 225 mph). It is one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in British history.
Example: HS2 construction has turned parts of the Chilterns into a giant building site.
Usage notes
The project originally included branches to Manchester and Leeds, but the northern legs were canceled in October 2023 because of soaring costs. The London terminus is planned at Euston, with an interim terminus at Old Oak Common. Opening dates have slipped into the 2030s. Its predecessor, High Speed 1 (HS1), links London to the Channel Tunnel.
