DMU stands for Diesel multiple unit, a rail and transit abbreviation.
Self-propelled passenger train powered by diesel engines mounted under the cars, used on non-electrified commuter and rural lines. DMUs avoid the cost of electrification on lightly used routes.
Example: The branch line runs a two-car DMU every hour between the valley towns.
Usage notes
Common in Britain, Germany and on some US commuter lines, such as Texas's TEXRail and Sonoma-Marin's SMART. Battery and hydrogen multiple units are emerging as low-emission replacements. A bi-mode train can run on both diesel and electric power.
