Stands forJapanese government bond
CategoriesBusiness & Finance

JGB stands for Japanese government bond, a bond & Fixed-Income abbreviation.

Debt security issued by the government of Japan, with maturities from a few months to 40 years. Japan has the largest government debt relative to GDP among developed economies, well above 200 percent, and the Bank of Japan owns roughly half of outstanding JGBs.

Example: The 10-year JGB yield rose as investors bet the Bank of Japan would keep raising rates.

Usage notes

For years the Bank of Japan capped JGB yields under yield curve control, which ended in 2024. Most JGBs are held domestically, which has helped Japan sustain high debt at low rates. Rising JGB yields can pull Japanese money home from foreign bond markets.
