1. Old Age Security

Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations

Canadian monthly pension paid to most people aged 65 and older based on years of residence in Canada, regardless of work history. It is funded from general tax revenues, and higher-income recipients repay part of it through a recovery tax.

Example: Her OAS payment is deposited on the third-to-last business day of each month.

OAS began in 1952. A full pension requires 40 years of residence after age 18, and low-income seniors can also receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement. Payments are indexed to inflation quarterly. In international affairs, OAS means the Organization of American States.

2. Organization of American States

Organizations & Companies · International Organization Abbreviations

Regional organization of independent states of the Americas that promotes democracy, human rights, security and development.

Example: The OAS electoral mission reported irregularities in the vote count.

Its charter was signed in Bogotá in 1948. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is one of its key bodies. Cuba's participation was suspended in 1962, and the suspension was lifted in 2009, though Cuba has not returned; Nicaragua withdrew in 2023. In Spanish and French it is the OEA. In Canada, OAS also means Old Age Security.

3. Option-adjusted spread

Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations

Yield spread of a bond over a benchmark curve, usually Treasuries, after removing the value of embedded options such as call features or mortgage prepayment rights. It lets bonds with and without options be compared on a like-for-like basis.

Example: Agency MBS look cheap, with an OAS of 60 basis points over Treasuries.

OAS is calculated with interest-rate models that simulate many possible rate paths. Index providers report OAS for corporate bond indices as the standard measure of credit spreads. For a bond with no embedded options, OAS is close to the ordinary zero-volatility spread (Z-spread).
