H&H stands for Hemoglobin and hematocrit, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Shorthand for ordering or reporting hemoglobin and hematocrit together, often repeatedly to watch for bleeding after surgery, trauma or a gastrointestinal bleed. It is a cheaper, focused alternative to a full CBC when only red cell mass needs tracking.
Example: Serial H&H every 6 hours overnight; transfuse if Hgb drops below 7.
Usage notes
Usually written as a pair, such as "H&H 9.1/27.4". Immediately after an acute hemorrhage the H&H can look normal because plasma and cells are lost in equal proportion; values fall only after fluid shifts or IV fluids dilute the blood, so a stable early result does not exclude major bleeding.
