CrCl stands for Creatinine clearance, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Rate at which creatinine is removed from the blood, either measured with a timed 24-hour urine collection or estimated with the Cockcroft-Gault equation (1976) from age, weight, sex and serum creatinine. Many drug labels give kidney dose adjustments by CrCl in mL/min rather than by eGFR.
Example: CrCl 28 mL/min by Cockcroft-Gault; reduce enoxaparin to once daily.
Usage notes
Because the tubules secrete some creatinine, CrCl overestimates true GFR by roughly 10 to 20 percent. Cockcroft-Gault is not indexed to body surface area, and results vary with whether actual, ideal or adjusted body weight is used, a frequent point of discussion between pharmacists and prescribers. A 24-hour collection is often inaccurate because of missed or extra urine.
