1. Estimated glomerular filtration rate

Calculated estimate of how much blood the kidneys filter each minute, derived from serum creatinine (and sometimes cystatin C) plus age and sex and reported in mL/min/1.73 m2. Values of 90 or above are normal; an eGFR below 60 for more than three months indicates chronic kidney disease, and below 15 indicates kidney failure.
Example: eGFR 42, so metformin dose reduced and a nephrology referral placed.
Most US labs use the CKD-EPI 2021 equation, adopted after a National Kidney Foundation and American Society of Nephrology task force recommended removing the race coefficient used in older equations. The transplant network later required race-neutral calculations for waitlist time. The estimate is unreliable when creatinine is changing rapidly, as in acute kidney injury, and in people with very high or very low muscle mass, where cystatin C helps.
2. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)

Cell surface receptor tyrosine kinase that drives growth signals; activating EGFR mutations are found in about 15 percent of lung adenocarcinomas in Western patients and a much higher share in East Asian never-smokers. EGFR is also targeted by antibodies in colorectal and head and neck cancers.
Example: EGFR L858R mutation on NGS; first-line osimertinib per FLAURA.
The most common sensitizing mutations are exon 19 deletions and L858R. Third-generation inhibitor osimertinib became first-line standard after the FLAURA trial (2018) and is used after surgery based on ADAURA (2020). Antibodies such as cetuximab and panitumumab target EGFR in RAS wild-type colorectal cancer. In kidney medicine the similar eGFR means estimated glomerular filtration rate.
