ECOG stands for Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Cancer research group whose performance status scale rates how a patient's disease affects daily functioning, from 0 (fully active) to 5 (dead). ECOG performance status is one of the most important factors in deciding who can safely receive chemotherapy.
Example: ECOG 1: symptomatic but fully ambulatory, eligible for the trial.
Usage notes
The scale, published by Oken and colleagues in 1982, defines 2 as ambulatory and capable of self-care but unable to work, up and about more than half of waking hours, and 3 as capable of only limited self-care and confined to a bed or chair more than half the time. Most trials enroll patients with ECOG 0 to 1. The group merged with the American College of Radiology Imaging Network in 2012 to form ECOG-ACRIN.
