FSIS stands for Food Safety and Inspection Service, a US federal agency abbreviation.

USDA agency that inspects meat, poultry and processed egg products and announces recalls when they may be contaminated or mislabeled. Federal inspectors must be present in slaughter plants during operation, and inspected products carry the round "U.S. Inspected and Passed" mark.

Example: The FSIS recall notice covers 12,000 pounds of ground beef shipped to stores in five states.

Usage notes

Federal meat inspection began with the Meat Inspection Act of 1906, passed after Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle; the current agency name dates to 1981. Seafood, produce and most other foods are regulated by the FDA, which is why food recalls come from two different agencies. FSIS is led by an Administrator.
