1. Federal Trade Commission
Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations
Enforces consumer protection and antitrust laws, challenging deceptive advertising, scams, data-privacy abuses and anticompetitive mergers. The independent agency runs the National Do Not Call Registry and collects fraud reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Example: The FTC sued to block the merger, arguing it would raise prices for consumers.
Congress established the FTC in 1914 as part of President Woodrow Wilson's trust-busting agenda; it shares antitrust enforcement with the Justice Department's Antitrust Division. Disclosure rules for social media influencers come from its endorsement guides. The President's removal of commissioners in 2025 led to litigation over the agency's independence.
2. Fundamental theorem of calculus
Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations
The theorem linking differentiation and integration: the derivative of an accumulated integral is the original function, and a definite integral can be evaluated with any antiderivative F as F(b) − F(a).
Example: By the FTC, the integral of 2x from 0 to 3 equals 3² − 0² = 9.
Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz independently developed it in the late 17th century, building on work by Isaac Barrow. Textbooks split it into two parts, FTC 1 and FTC 2, though the numbering varies between books. Outside mathematics, FTC usually means the US Federal Trade Commission.
3. Emtricitabine
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor for HIV, almost always used in combination pills with tenofovir (TDF or TAF). It is also active against hepatitis B.
Example: Regimen: DTG plus TDF/FTC, one of each daily with or without food.
The letters come from its chemical description as a fluorinated thiacytidine (5-fluoro-3'-thiacytidine), a close relative of lamivudine (3TC). Stopping emtricitabine or lamivudine in patients with hepatitis B can trigger a hepatitis flare. In US government and business contexts, FTC means Federal Trade Commission.
4. Foreign tax credit
Business & Finance · Tax Abbreviations
US credit for income taxes paid to other countries, reducing US tax dollar for dollar so the same income is not taxed twice. Investors with small amounts of foreign tax, often from international index funds, can claim it directly on Form 1040 without filing Form 1116.
Example: The FTC from my international fund's 1099-DIV wiped out most of the US tax on those dividends.
Taxpayers may choose either the credit or an itemized deduction for foreign taxes, but the credit is almost always worth more. It is limited to the US tax on foreign-source income, with excess credits carried back one year or forward ten. The same letters usually mean the Federal Trade Commission.
