VCR stands for Videocassette recorder, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Machine that records and plays analog video on magnetic tape cassettes, most commonly in the VHS format. VCRs let households record TV shows and rent movies from the late 1970s until DVDs took over in the 2000s.
Example: We found a box of wedding tapes, but nobody has a working VCR anymore.
Usage notes
Ampex built the first practical video tape recorder for TV studios in 1956, and Sony's U-matic (1971) introduced the cassette. The US Supreme Court's 1984 "Betamax case" ruled that recording shows at home for later viewing was fair use. The blinking "12:00" on unset VCR clocks became a symbol of confusing technology. Funai made the last VCRs in 2016.
