8K stands for 8K resolution, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Display and video resolution of 7680 by 4320 pixels, about 33 million pixels and four times 4K. 8K TVs upscale lower-resolution content, since little native 8K material exists.
Example: The 8K TV looks stunning in the store demo, but nearly everything I watch is 4K at best.
Usage notes
Japan's NHK launched the world's first 8K satellite broadcast channel in December 2018. Phones such as Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra (2020) introduced 8K video recording. Sales of 8K TVs have remained small, held back by lack of content, high prices and the bandwidth needed to stream it. HDMI 2.1 supports 8K at 60 Hz.
