Usage notes

First published in 1993. Category 3 findings carry a malignancy risk of 2 percent or less, while category 5 carries 95 percent or more, and category 4 is split into 4A, 4B and 4C. The lexicon also grades breast density from A (almost entirely fatty) to D (extremely dense). A US federal rule effective in September 2024 requires mammography reports to tell patients whether their breasts are dense.
