CBCT stands for Cone-beam computed tomography, a medical imaging abbreviation.

CT technique using a cone-shaped X-ray beam and a flat detector that rotates once around the head, producing 3D images at a lower dose than conventional CT. It is widely used in dentistry for implant planning, impacted teeth and root canal work, and in ENT, orthopedics and interventional suites.

Example: CBCT shows adequate bone height for an implant at site 19.

Usage notes

Cone-beam systems are also built into radiation therapy machines to verify patient position before each treatment and into angiography rooms. Soft tissue contrast is poorer than with medical CT, so CBCT is used mainly for bone and teeth. Dental units are compact enough for private practices.
