LAX stands for Los Angeles International Airport, an airport code abbreviation.

Los Angeles's primary airport and one of the busiest in the world, located in Westchester about 16 miles southwest of downtown. It is a hub or focus city for American, Delta, United and Alaska Airlines and a leading US gateway to Asia and Oceania.

Example: Landed at LAX at 6, but it took an hour to get out of the horseshoe traffic loop.

Usage notes

ICAO code KLAX. The airport began as Mines Field in 1928 and originally used the two-letter code LA; when airport codes were standardized at three letters, an X was added as a filler, a pattern also seen at PDX and PHX. The 1961 Theme Building, with its spidery parabolic arches, became an icon of Space Age "Googie" architecture. Pronounced as separate letters, never as the word "lax."
