1. Transcranial magnetic stimulation

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Noninvasive brain stimulation using a magnetic coil placed against the scalp to induce electrical currents in targeted brain regions, typically the left prefrontal cortex for depression. Patients remain awake, and standard courses involve daily sessions over four to six weeks.

Example: TMS session 18 of 36 for TRD, PHQ-9 down from 21 to 12; mild scalp discomfort only.

The FDA cleared TMS for depression in 2008, followed by OCD (2018) and smoking cessation (2020). Theta-burst protocols shorten sessions to a few minutes, and an accelerated protocol completing treatment in five days was cleared in 2022. Seizures are a rare risk. Often written rTMS for repetitive TMS.

2. Tetramethylsilane

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Volatile, inert liquid, Si(CH3)4, added in small amounts to NMR samples as the zero point of the chemical-shift scale. Its twelve equivalent protons give one sharp signal upfield of almost all organic compounds, so peaks are reported in ppm relative to TMS.

Example: Chemical shifts are reported in ppm relative to TMS at 0.00.

Its boiling point of about 26 °C makes it easy to remove after measurement. Many labs now reference spectra to the residual signal of the deuterated solvent instead of adding TMS. In synthesis papers TMS more often means the trimethylsilyl group, a separate meaning.

3. Trimethylsilyl group

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Protecting group and molecular fragment, (CH3)3Si-, used in organic synthesis to mask reactive alcohols and alkynes temporarily, as in TMS ethers. Reagents such as TMS-Cl (trimethylsilyl chloride) install it, and fluoride sources or mild acid remove it.

Example: The terminal alkyne was protected as its TMS derivative before the coupling step.

Silyl protecting groups form a family ordered by stability: TMS is the most easily removed, followed by bulkier groups such as TES, TBS (also TBDMS) and TIPS. TMS derivatives are also made to volatilize sugars and acids for gas chromatography.

4. Transportation management system

Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations

Software for planning, executing and optimizing freight shipments, including carrier selection, rate shopping, load building, tendering, tracking, freight auditing and payment.

Example: The TMS picks the cheapest carrier that can still meet the delivery date.

Shippers and 3PLs use TMS software to consolidate loads and benchmark rates. It often integrates with WMS and ERP systems.
