1. Swiss franc

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Switzerland and Liechtenstein use the Swiss franc, issued by the Swiss National Bank and divided into 100 centimes (Rappen in German). It is a classic safe-haven currency in times of global turmoil.

Example: The Zurich hotel charges CHF 320 per night, breakfast included.

The code comes from Confoederatio Helvetica, the Latin name of Switzerland, plus F for franc. The Swiss National Bank held a minimum exchange rate of 1.20 francs per euro from 2011 until abruptly scrapping it in January 2015, causing a sudden surge in the franc. The 1,000-franc note is among the world's most valuable banknotes.

2. Congestive heart failure

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Chronic condition in which the heart cannot pump or fill well enough to meet the body's needs, so fluid backs up into the lungs and legs. Typical signs are breathlessness, swelling, fatigue and weight gain from fluid; more than 6 million US adults live with heart failure.

Example: Patient with CHF presents with a 4 kg weight gain, orthopnea and 2+ pitting edema to the knees.

Current ACC/AHA/HFSA guidelines (2022) simply say "heart failure" (HF), because not every patient is congested, but "CHF" persists in charts, billing and everyday speech. Severity is described by ACC/AHA stages A to D and NYHA functional classes I to IV. Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped, which is cardiac arrest. Classification by ejection fraction (HFrEF, HFpEF) now drives treatment choices.
