1. Congenital heart disease

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Structural heart defects present at birth, such as septal defects, tetralogy of Fallot or transposition of the great arteries. It is the most common type of birth defect, affecting about 1 percent of births, roughly 40,000 babies a year in the United States.

Example: Newborn failed the pulse-oximetry screen; echocardiogram ordered to rule out critical CHD.

Newborn pulse-oximetry screening for critical CHD (CCHD) was added to the US Recommended Uniform Screening Panel in 2011. Thanks to surgical advances, adults with congenital defects now outnumber affected children in many countries, giving rise to the subspecialty of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). Pediatric and obstetric context almost always signals this meaning rather than coronary disease.

2. Coronary heart disease

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Heart disease caused by atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries, essentially the same condition as CAD. The term dominates epidemiology and public-health statistics, such as the Framingham risk equations and national mortality reports, while bedside clinicians in the US more often write CAD.

Example: Her estimated 10-year CHD risk was 18 percent based on age, cholesterol and smoking status.

British publications commonly use CHD where American notes use CAD. Some authors reserve CHD for the clinical manifestations (angina, infarction) and CAD for the underlying arterial disease. In pediatric and congenital cardiology the same letters mean congenital heart disease, so a pediatric chart reading "CHD" almost never refers to coronary disease.
