CIED stands for Cardiac implantable electronic device, a cardiology abbreviation.

Collective term for pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, cardiac resynchronization devices and implantable loop recorders. It is used in guidelines on infection, perioperative management, MRI safety and remote monitoring that apply across device types.

Example: CIED infection with pocket erosion; complete system extraction recommended.

Usage notes

Pronounced "seed." Infection of a CIED usually requires removal of the entire device and all leads, not antibiotics alone. Before surgery, anesthesia teams ask for the device type, the reason for implant, whether the patient is pacemaker-dependent and how to suspend shocks. Remote monitoring lets clinics review device data from the patient's home.
