BGN stands for Bulgarian lev, a currency abbreviation.
Bulgaria's former currency, replaced by the euro on 1 January 2026 at a fixed rate of 1.95583 leva per euro. The lev had been tied to the Deutsche Mark and then the euro through a currency board since 1997.
Example: Old price tags in Sofia showed BGN beside the euro equivalent during the changeover.
Usage notes
The conversion rate matched the long-standing peg, so the switch did not revalue savings or wages. Lev means "lion", and its subunit was the stotinka. Bulgaria became the 21st member of the euro area, three years after Croatia.
