ARS stands for Argentine peso, a currency abbreviation.

Argentina's currency, issued by the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic. Decades of high inflation have made the US dollar a common store of value, and parallel rates such as the "blue dollar" long coexisted with the official one.

Example: Dinner for two in Buenos Aires came to ARS 85,000 with wine.

Usage notes

The current peso dates from 1992, after the austral and earlier pesos lost their value; from 1991 to 2001 it was pegged one-to-one to the US dollar under the convertibility plan, which collapsed in a 2001-2002 crisis. Local prices use the $ sign. A large devaluation in late 2023 and the easing of currency controls in 2025 reshaped the exchange market.
