1. Network (top-level domain)
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
A generic top-level domain originally meant for network infrastructure such as ISPs and hosting providers, now open to anyone. It is often chosen when the .com version of a name is taken.
Example: Our CDN hostnames live under a separate .net domain to keep cookies away from them.
Created in 1985 and operated by Verisign alongside .com. Infrastructure services still use it for back-end hostnames, such as Amazon's cloudfront.net. Microsoft's .NET development platform shares the letters but has nothing to do with the domain.
2. Neuroendocrine tumor (NET)
Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations
Tumor arising from hormone-producing neuroendocrine cells, most often in the small intestine, pancreas, rectum, appendix or lungs. Many grow slowly, and some secrete hormones that cause symptoms such as flushing and diarrhea (carcinoid syndrome).
Example: Well-differentiated small bowel NET, Ki-67 2%, with liver mets; octreotide LAR monthly.
Tumors are graded by the Ki-67 proliferation index and mitotic count, with highly aggressive forms called neuroendocrine carcinomas. Somatostatin receptor imaging (Ga-68 DOTATATE PET) guides treatment with somatostatin analogs and lutetium-177 dotatate, a radioligand therapy approved by the FDA in 2018. Steve Jobs had a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, which differs greatly from typical pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
3. New English Translation (NET)
Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations
Translation first published in 2005 by Biblical Studies Press, known for more than 60,000 translators' notes explaining choices and textual issues, and designed from the start to be freely available online.
Example: The NET notes explain why the translators chose "the Lord" for the divine name.
Commonly called the NET Bible. Its creators were associated with Dallas Theological Seminary. The free online model helped spread its use in missions and Bible software.
