ARIA stands for Accessible Rich Internet Applications, an Internet & web abbreviation.
A W3C specification of HTML attributes, such as role, aria-label and aria-expanded, that tell screen readers what custom widgets are and what state they are in. It makes dynamic interfaces such as tabs, menus and modal dialogs understandable to assistive technology.
Example: Add aria-expanded to the menu button so screen readers announce whether it is open.
Usage notes
Formally WAI-ARIA; version 1.0 became a W3C Recommendation in 2014. The first rule of ARIA is to prefer native HTML elements, such as a real button, over adding roles to generic divs. Incorrect ARIA can make a page less accessible than none at all, a point stressed in accessibility audits.
