AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, an Internet & web abbreviation.
A technique for updating parts of a web page by exchanging data with the server in the background, without a full page reload. It made web apps such as Gmail and Google Maps feel as responsive as desktop software.
Example: The search box uses AJAX to fetch suggestions as the user types.
Usage notes
The name was coined by Jesse James Garrett in a February 2005 essay, though the underlying XMLHttpRequest object dated from Microsoft's work on Outlook Web Access around 1999. Despite the name, most such requests today exchange JSON rather than XML and use the newer fetch API. Garrett himself wrote it as "Ajax".
