NGS stands for Next-generation sequencing, a genetics abbreviation also used in medicine.
Family of high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies that read millions to billions of short DNA fragments in parallel, replacing one-at-a-time Sanger sequencing for large projects. NGS has cut the cost of sequencing a human genome from about 100 million dollars in 2001 to a few hundred dollars.
Example: The hereditary cancer panel uses NGS to examine 84 genes from a single saliva sample.
Usage notes
Also called massively parallel or second-generation sequencing. The first commercial platform, 454 pyrosequencing, launched in 2005, and Illumina's sequencing-by-synthesis now dominates the market. Long-read "third-generation" methods from Pacific Biosciences and Oxford Nanopore read thousands to millions of bases per molecule.
