1. Logarithm of the odds (score)
Science & Engineering · Genetics Abbreviations
Statistical measure in linkage analysis that compares the likelihood that a disease and a genetic marker are inherited together because they are close on a chromosome with the likelihood that they are not. A LOD score of 3 or more, odds of 1,000 to 1, is the traditional threshold for significant linkage.
Example: A maximum LOD score of 4.2 was obtained at 12 cM from the marker.
Newton Morton introduced the LOD score in 1955. Linkage analysis in large families mapped many single-gene disorders before GWAS became the dominant approach for common diseases. Pronounced as a word, "lod."
2. Line of duty
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Determination of whether a service member's injury, illness or death occurred in the line of duty and was not due to misconduct, which affects medical care, disability benefits and survivor benefits, especially for reservists.
Example: An LOD investigation was opened after the soldier broke his leg off duty on a motorcycle.
Many line-of-duty determinations are informal and quickly approved, but cases involving alcohol, drugs or misconduct receive formal investigation. For Guard and Reserve members, a favorable LOD is often essential to receiving military medical care after training.
