LZ stands for Landing zone, a military term abbreviation also used in government.
Area used for landing helicopters or tiltrotor aircraft to insert or extract troops and supplies. A "hot LZ" is one under enemy fire. Pathfinders or ground units mark and secure the zone beforehand.
Example: The Black Hawks touched down at the LZ just after midnight.
Usage notes
The term is strongly associated with the Vietnam War, where landing zones such as LZ X-Ray at Ia Drang were the sites of major battles. SpaceX names its rocket landing pads LZ-1 and LZ-2 at Cape Canaveral. Pronounced "L-Z" or "Lima Zulu."
